Essential Apps for Korea Travel

Must-have apps before you land

Navigation

  • Naver Map β€” the most accurate Korean map for walking, transit, and driving. Has English mode. Use this instead of Google Maps for actual directions.
  • Kakao Map β€” similar coverage, slightly different routing. Also English-capable.
  • Subway Korea β€” clean offline subway map for Seoul, Busan, Daegu

Transportation

  • Kakao T β€” taxi-hailing app, all-English mode. Used by virtually every Korean. Card-payment-only option avoids cash haggling.
  • Korail Talk β€” book KTX and other trains
  • Tmoney GO β€” recharge T-money cards from your phone

Translation

  • Papago (by Naver) β€” far better than Google Translate for Korean. Has voice, photo, and conversation modes.
  • Google Lens works decently as backup for translating menus

Food delivery

  • Coupang Eats β€” easiest to use as a foreigner, English available, broad coverage
  • Baemin (Baedal Minjok) β€” Korea’s biggest food delivery app, Korean-only but visual UI helps
  • Yogiyo β€” alternative with English mode in some areas

Shopping & lifestyle

  • Olive Young app β€” for K-beauty hauls with member pricing
  • Coupang β€” Amazon-like everything-store with same-day delivery
  • Daiso β€” Korea’s super-cheap variety chain; visit a store rather than the app

Travel essentials

  • Tripadvisor and Klook β€” for booking tours, transfers, and experiences
  • VisitKorea β€” official tourism app with attraction info and event listings
  • Citywalk Korea β€” for your self-guided neighborhood walks (you’re here!)

Communication

  • KakaoTalk β€” the universal Korean messaging app. If you’re here long enough to make Korean friends, you’ll need it.
  • WhatsApp and iMessage work but most Koreans don’t use them

Money

  • Wise / Revolut β€” multi-currency cards with reasonable Korean ATM withdrawal
  • Many international cards now have 0% foreign transaction options β€” check yours

What you don’t need

  • A Korean SIM card for the app store: most apps work fine with foreign Apple/Google accounts
  • Foreign navigation apps for actual walking directions in Korea β€” they will fail you
